Billing choices

Currently you can select between 1, 2, and 3 years of hosting. You can’t start with a monthly plan. The amount of discounts you get for choosing longer periods of hosting is received in 3 ways. Firstly the average monthly price will be lower. Second, you can wait longer until they start the monthly billing, which happens after your initial period. And third, the monthly cost after your initial period will be lower if you select 2 or 3 years of hosting. They don’t try to hide their prices in any ways which is good. The price and renewal price is easy to spot on their billing page.

Cheap plan with lots of features

What is most impressive about this cheap hosting plan is that you can actually use it to host unlimited websites. Most other hosts restricts their cheapest plan to allow for a maximum of 1 hosted website and domain. Note though that you will be limited due to the amount of resources you get access to.

With the shared web hosting plan from iPage you will get all the basics + some sweet extras, like a FREE domain. Whois privacy for the domain is expensive though, currently $9.99/year for the first year, and then renewing at $12.99/year. If you need whois privacy, it would actually be cheaper to use one of the top domain registrars and benefit from free whois privacy.

Optional extra features

WordPress optimization includes free themes, plugins, malware detection and removal as well as expert WP support. G Suite from Google will give you professional tools like professional email, online storage, shared calendars and video conferencing and cost $5/mo. An essential extra that I would recommend to get is the daily backups. Website security is another feature that can be really useful.

iPage data center location and support

Servers are located in Boston, MA, USA.

This host offers 24/7 live chat support for billing and sales questions, and can also help with technical questions and will post a ticket on your behalf, when required, to the server technicians that are available 24/7. Their support is outsourced to India and I did try them out. I would say that they were only mediocre. They were taking a bit long to answer questions and not answering all the questions. I guess having outsourced support is one of the ways you can get really cheap hosting, so it's all OK. Having 24/7 live support is a petty nice feature to have even when it is outsourced.

Conclusion

If you want to get a discount hosting provider – and most of your visitors will come from the USA, or at least North America, then iPage very well might be the best option. Even though this is a really cheap plan it has lots of available extra features and live support. Notice that there is a non refundable fee for the free domain name if you cancel your account during the 30 money back guaranteed days. You will keep ownership of the domain name in that case which is good.

You need to pre pay for 12 months to get the price of $3.75/mo for your initial period. After the first year the plan will renew at $9.49/mo. With monthly billing this server is $9.49/mo.

The iPage WordPress web hosting plans comes with pre-installed free themes and plugins for your convenience.

Conclusion

I would not pay extra every moth with a host just for pre installed plugins and themes when joining. Especially considering how easy it is to do yourself. However the WordPress hosting servers are less dense which means that you get a little bit more resources for your sites.

This is a budget WordPress hosting option with lots of benefits. The WordPress hosting servers are less dense which means that you get a little bit more resources for your sites. Having included expert WP support is great, if you’re not an expert yourself, but do note that you can only contact that support by phone, on a toll free USA number.

Their automatic malware removal is great and can help you from experience downtime you otherwise would have gotten if your sites got attacked with malware. To get malware that can cause downtime and lots of work trying to remove it is more common than it should be, so this is a great feature.

Price: $119.4 first year ($9.95/mo)

Type of server: Shared, WordPress

Location: USA

Features: FREE Domain, FREE Domain Privacy, SFTP, SSD Storage, SSH, SSL Certificate, Unlimited Websites, USA Based Support, WP-CLI

Optional extras: ShowMalware Remover, MySQL VPS, WordPress Migration Service.

Payment options: Credit Card

Guarantees: 97 Day Money Back

To get the $9.95/mo price it is required to set up a yearly billing cycle. Unlike many hosts which have discounts for their initial term and renews at substantially higher prices, DreamHost renews this plan at the same price and duration as your initial commitment. If you select a 3 year billing cycles the price will be only $7.95/mo. If you rather want to be billed monthly it will cost $10.95/mo.

Plan features

The DreamHost WordPress Shared plan comes with WordPress pre-installed and you can host unlimited WP websites with it. The SSL Certificate is the free Let’s Ecrypt SSL. The FREE Domain is included with 1 or 3 year billing cycles and it will only be free for the first year, after that it will be reasonably priced to renew. The Malware Remover is not only a malware scan like most other sites offer, but also as suggested, a malware remover. This could save your website from downtime and it costs $3/mo.

The MySQL VPS gives you virtually dedicated resources for hosting your database. DreamHost claims it will increase the speed and reliability of your database, I am not sure how important it is if you use caching plugins for your WordPress sites. The first week is free and after that you will only pay for the amount of resources your database needs, starting at $15/mo.

The WordPress Migration Service costs $99 and promises to seamlessly move your WordPress installation over to your new hosting without downtime. It costs $99 which I think is a bit expensive considering you are also moving your hosting to this company. It could be good value though if you have lots of content and plugins that would make your site a real hassle to move and might require payed plugins to get the job done anyways. You need to check “Install WordPress” on the billing page (after choosing domain) to show the WordPress Migration Service option.

Conclusion

The long 97 day money back guarantee with this offers is great and reassuring. Few payment options is a drawback. Dreamhost are not accepting PayPal unlike most other hosts. Dreamhost states that this is the least powerful of their 4 WordPress hosting plans and that sites hosted with this offer only can accommodate an estimate of up to 10.000 monthly visitors.

However it is almost only half the price of the Basic DreamPress plan and that plan does not have a free domain or whois privacy.

You need to select and pre pay for 1 year of hosting to get the price of $13.75/mo. If you choose monthly billing this plan will cost $15/mo.

DreamHost allow easy scaling of resources with their VPS to upgrade your amount of server resources. That could make starting out with a cheap plan the best option for site without lots of traffic alread. All VPS plans have 100% SSD storage. One of the reasons why they can offer these plans at so low prices is the fact that they do not offer cPanel, instead they have created their own webpanel. cPanel do cost $13 per month so it is a great way to save money for the cheapest plans.

Conclusion

A great choice for low cost VPS hosting. However the lack of cPanel, and no money back gurantee lowers the score for these plans a little. You might also want to compare the DreamHost VPS plans with the slightly more scalable and better value plans from Digital Ocean here.

To get the price of $16.95/ mo you need to pre pay for 1 year of hosting. If you want to pay on a month-to-month basis the price will be slightly higher: $19.95/mo.

Plan features

The DreamPress hosting plans has lots of bells and whistles for your WordPress site. They will install WP for you with several plugins and themes that are considered "battle-tested" by DreamHost. They promise to serve your web pages lightning fast with features like SSD storage, Object Caching, HTTP2, PHP 7 and the Jetpack plugin. You also get access to WordPress Expert Support 24/7.

Migrating to DreamPress

The WordPress Migration Service costs $99 and promises to seamlessly move your WordPress installation over to your new hosting without downtime. It costs $99 which I think is a bit expensive considering you are also moving your hosting to this company. It could be good value though if you have lots of content and plugins that would make your site a real hassle to move and might require payed plugins to get the job done anyways.

Domain price

A .com domain is $11.99 for the first year and slightly more after that, which is great considering that the Whois Privacy is free.

Conclusion

They only accept credit and debit cards and that is a slight drawback. The 30 day money back guarantee is OK. The limiting of how many websites you can host is another drawback. Or at least it could be, if you have multiple sites.

The performance features of the DreamPress plans are nice and will help your sites load fast with features like Brotli compression, HTTP/2 and the Nginx web server. Your site will also get HTTPS by default. If you outgrow your DreamPress plan you can upgrade with a simple click of the mouse, unless you are already hosted with the most powerful one.

Dreamhost states that this plan is suitable for websites with around 10.000 monthly visitors.

All VPS plans from iPage comes with cPanel included, SSD storage and one or more Dedicated IP address. You can get an even lower price if you select 2 year billing cycles. Month to month billing will add a little to the price.

Conclusion

Just a decent option for low cost VPS hosting, value wise. It can’t quite compare with the cheapest cloud plan though. That offer from Cloudways and Digital Ocean grants the same amount of resources at a 70% discount compared with this plan. The low amount of resources would however not be enough if you want to host several sites or one site with medium traffic. 1 GB of RAM will be exhaused fast if you use a CMS like WordPress with several plugins.

SSD storage will help let your sites load fast, and a nice bonus is the free domain. Live support is nice, and so is the price for this plan!
