Sometimes we find it necessary to migrate from one web host to another. This may be due to pricing, speed, features, or any other reason. However, sometimes people are reluctant to make the change because of fear of the complexity of the migration process.
There are several things that need to be considered when transferring from one web hosting company to another.
The first thing you need to do is to make sure that your domain name or website address points to the new location. This can typically be handled through cPanel, or through another online form.
If you are transferring an established website that already has traffic you want to wait with pointing the domain to the new host until you know everything is set up and ready to go. This means that the site will be live and functioning as intended once the domain points to the new server. That way you can transfer the site to the new hosting company without any downtime.
You will need to download copies of all files from the original site via FTP, to your computer, and then upload them to the new host. This will include all HTML files, scripts (e.g. PHP, etc), images, and multimedia.
You will need to make an SQL dump file from any existing databases. This can often be done through cPanel, or by exporting the file from phpMyAdmin. This will create a simple text file which can then be imported into the new host.
If you have set up any email accounts on the prior host associated with your domain name, you will need to recreate these files on the new server.
Many web hosts will provide migration services to automate the entire process. This can either be handled for a small fee or for free, depending on the host.Back to our FAQ
